"Do you talk?" a young woman asks her new male therapist. She says her last therapist wouldn't talk. The therapist, Bill, is a young man who has just begun his training as a therapist. The patient, Jeanie, a beautiful ex-ballerina, is not only suicidal but also has four personalities. Despite his training analyst's objections, Bill plows ahead and succeeds in partially integrating Jeanie's four personalities. However, he becomes inexorably involved and eventually ends up, after a brawl with her father, in his patient's bed, where he confesses he is in love with her and her three other personalities. That is when the "fun" begins, and the tale proceeds to its haunting and tragic end. Now a feature film available on DVD.

If this novel about therapy has an authentic flavor, it is probably because it was written by a psychoanalyst. I found it to be engrossing from the first page. It's the story of a beginning therapist and the first patient assigned to him at the clinic where he is doing his internship. This first patient turns out to be suicidal and a multiple personality. The therapist, Bill, discusses this case both with his therapy supervisor and his own therapist, who both warn him of the pitfalls of doing therapy with such a complicated patient. Despite their warnings he slowly falls in love with Jeanie--or as it is called in the novel, he develops a "countertransference" for her. She has been sexually abused by her father and is still abused by him. After Bill orders Jeanie to break with her father, her father threatens to throw out important tapes for a book she is writing, so the therapist takes her to her home to rescue the tapes, where he has a confrontation with the patient's father. This is followed by their first kiss and a night in bed, where he meets each of her four personalities. Unfortunately, the love story turns dark in the end. I want give away the ending. The novel is written in three parts. The first part is written by Bill, in retrospect. The second part is Jeanie's diary. The final part is Bill's diary. Thus you see the relationship from both their points of view and it is fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have enjoyed all the author's novels.Product details
